If you are moving in London, you cannot simply park a removal van outside your property. Most boroughs require a parking bay suspension or a visitor permit. Without it, your removal team may be forced to park far away, adding hours to your move and possibly a fine.

This guide explains how parking suspensions work, what they cost, and how to arrange them.

What Is a Parking Suspension?

A parking suspension is a temporary ban on parking in a specific bay or set of bays, authorised by your local council. It allows your removal van to park legally and safely while loading or unloading.

Without a suspension:

  • Your van may be ticketed (fines start at GBP 60 to GBP 130)
  • The van may be towed (recovery costs start at GBP 200)
  • The movers may need to park far away, adding time and cost

How Much Does a Parking Suspension Cost?

Borough Typical Cost per Bay
Camden GBP 80 to GBP 140
Westminster GBP 100 to GBP 200
Islington GBP 70 to GBP 130
Hackney GBP 60 to GBP 120
Wandsworth GBP 50 to GBP 100
Croydon GBP 40 to GBP 80
Barnet GBP 45 to GBP 90
Greenwich GBP 50 to GBP 100

Costs vary by borough, bay type, and duration. Central London boroughs charge more.

How to Apply

  1. Find your borough council website
  2. Search for 'parking suspension' or 'skip permit'
  3. Complete the online form
  4. Provide your address, dates, and vehicle registration numbers
  5. Pay the fee
  6. Receive confirmation by email

Apply at least 2 weeks in advance. Some councils require more notice (up to 4 weeks).

What Information You Need

  • Exact dates of the move
  • Your address and postcode
  • Vehicle registration numbers of all removal vans
  • Number of bays needed (usually 1 to 2)
  • Your contact details

Ask your removal company for the registration numbers in advance. At Vano Removals, we provide these automatically with every booking.

What If I Cannot Get a Suspension in Time?

Options:

  • Ask the removal company to arrive early (before parking restrictions start)
  • Check if your street has free parking on weekends
  • Use a nearby loading bay if allowed
  • Confirm with the council if an emergency permit is possible

Do not risk a fine. It costs more than the suspension.

Red Routes and TfL Roads

Some London roads (Red Routes) are managed by Transport for London, not the local council. Suspensions on Red Routes need separate approval. Common examples:

  • Parts of the A40, A4, A13
  • Streets around major stations

Check TfL's website if you are unsure.

Congestion Charge and ULEZ

Even with a parking suspension, you may need to pay:

  • Congestion Charge: GBP 15 per day, Mon-Fri 7am to 6pm
  • ULEZ: GBP 12.50 per day if the van is not compliant

At Vano Removals, all our vehicles are ULEZ-compliant. We do not pass on extra charges for moving within the zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a parking permit to move house in London?

Yes, in most boroughs. You need a parking bay suspension, which costs GBP 40 to GBP 200 depending on the borough.

How far in advance should I apply?

At least 2 weeks. Some councils require up to 4 weeks notice.

What happens if I do not get one?

Your van may be ticketed or towed. Fines start at GBP 60. Towing costs start at GBP 200.

Can my removal company arrange it for me?

Some companies do. At Vano Removals, we provide the van registration numbers so you can apply quickly. Ask about full arrangement when you book.

Is a suspension the same as a permit?

No. A permit is for residents. A suspension temporarily removes parking from a specific bay for your move.
