Every box you move costs money. Whether you hire a man and van or a full removals team, the more you take, the more you pay.

Decluttering before you move reduces cost, saves time, and starts your new home clean. This guide covers 15 categories to sort before packing day.

Why Declutter Before Moving?

  • Reduces removal cost (smaller van, fewer crew hours)
  • Reduces packing time
  • Reduces unpacking time
  • Frees up space in the new home
  • You may make money by selling items
  • You may qualify for charity donations (tax relief on Gift Aid)

Rule of thumb: if you have not used it in 12 months, you probably will not miss it.

1. Expired Food and Spices

  • Check every cupboard for expired tins, jars, and spices
  • Dispose of anything past its use-by date
  • Use up what you can in the weeks before the move

2. Old Bedding and Towels

  • Keep 2 sets of bedding per bed
  • Keep 2 to 3 towels per person
  • Donate the rest to animal shelters (they always need towels)

3. Clothes You Have Not Worn in a Year

  • Try the hanger trick: turn all hangers backwards, turn them forwards as you wear each item
  • After 6 months, anything still backwards gets donated or sold
  • Sell high-quality pieces on Vinted or eBay
  • Donate the rest to charity shops

4. Books You Will Not Read Again

  • Books are heavy. Packing 20 boxes of books is expensive
  • Sell on Ziffit, WeBuyBooks, or eBay
  • Donate to charity shops or local libraries
  • Keep only books you will re-read or reference

5. Duplicate Kitchen Items

  • Do you really need 3 garlic presses, 5 spatulas, and 12 mugs?
  • Keep 1 of each essential
  • Donate the rest to charity shops or Freecycle

6. Old Electronics and Cables

  • Chargers for phones you no longer own
  • Broken headphones
  • Old laptops and tablets
  • Obsolete cables (SCART, FireWire, etc.)
  • Sell working items on eBay or Back Market
  • Recycle broken electronics at Currys or local recycling centres

7. Expired Toiletries and Medicines

  • Check every bathroom cupboard
  • Dispose of expired medicines at a pharmacy
  • Bin old makeup and sun cream
  • Keep only what you actively use

8. Old Papers and Documents

  • Shred old bank statements, utility bills, and payslips
  • Digitise important documents
  • Keep tax records for 6 years (required by HMRC)
  • Keep passport, birth certificate, and contracts

9. Broken Furniture

  • Anything broken beyond repair goes
  • Donate to repair cafes if fixable
  • Book a house clearance if you have a lot to remove

10. Old Paint and Chemicals

  • Cannot be moved safely
  • Dispose of at your local council tip (household waste recycling centre)
  • Do not pour down drains

11. Duplicate Tools

  • Keep one set of essentials: hammer, screwdrivers, spanner
  • Donate duplicates to Men's Sheds or local charities

12. Garden Equipment You Do Not Use

  • Extra plant pots, broken tools, bags of unused compost
  • Sell on Facebook Marketplace
  • Donate to community gardens

13. Children's Toys and Clothes

  • Sort with children, not for them
  • Keep favourites, donate the rest
  • Sell popular items on Facebook Marketplace
  • Donate to children's hospitals or family charities

14. Old Sports Equipment

  • Bikes you no longer ride
  • Skis, snowboards, tennis rackets
  • Sell working items, donate the rest

15. Anything Broken or Unused in the Loft

  • If it is been in the loft for 3 years, it can go
  • Use a house clearance service if it is a lot

How to Dispose of Items Responsibly

Item Type Best Option
Clothes and textiles Charity shops, textile banks
Books Charity shops, Ziffit, WeBuyBooks
Electronics Currys, Back Market, council tip
Furniture British Heart Foundation, Facebook Marketplace
Chemicals and paint Council household waste centre
General waste Council collection or house clearance service

When to Use a House Clearance Service

If you have a lot to remove (loft, garage, whole property), a professional clearance is faster and often cheaper than multiple trips to the tip. See our house clearance service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does decluttering save on removals?

Reducing your load by 25% can cut removal costs by 10 to 20%. You also save packing time and materials.

What should I never move?

Perishable food, chemicals, paints, aerosols, and anything flammable. Dispose of these before moving day.

Can I sell old furniture?

Yes. Facebook Marketplace and eBay are the fastest. British Heart Foundation offers free collection for large items.

How do I dispose of old paint?

Take it to your local council household waste recycling centre. Do not pour it down drains or put it in regular rubbish.

How long does decluttering take?

Plan 1 to 2 weeks for a typical home. Work room by room and do not try to do everything in one day.
